Avatar, depression and the weakness of our liberal society …

Seriously, our society has just hit a new low. Our children are so distressed with the way the world is that they have to hide in fantasies and movies. We as parents should really be ashamed of ourselves. We have done a really bad job at raising our children and getting them ready for the things they face everyday.

After hearing about the support website for people that can’t handle coming back to reality after watching the movie “Avatar” (which I still cannot bring myself to spend good money on) I lam in shock. How on earth do you become so submersed in a fictional piece of work that you can’t handle coming back to a life you lead everyday? Are we that desperate for a utopia where none of us has to face difficulties? Do we really think our lives are that difficult that we can’t carry on? Please do me a favour. If you had the money to go watch the movie 1 or more times then your life is not as bad as you think it is. If you had the time to go watch the movie more or more times then your life really is not as bad as you think it is.

No I am not going to sugar coat this. I am not going to be polite as to the plight of the avatar watcher that is suffering withdrawal symptoms from not seeing the movie enough. I am just going to outright tell you that I think you need to grow up. That you need to accept your circumstances and make the most of them. Life is not perfect, humans are deprived, despicable creatures. Deal with it.  Accept responsibility for the things in your life and get on with it!

Accept responsibility for what, you might ask. Well for your own happiness. You and you alone are responsible for being happy. Stop relying on other people to make you happy. You might ask what qualifies me to make this statement and I will tell you that the scars on my arms and the damage to my internal organs. The fact that I was one of these people and by God’s grace alone I am no longer like that. Find joy in the horrible things that you have to do everyday and thank the Lord for giving you the opportunity to make the best of a bad situation. Stop relying on mechanisms to escape reality and start dealing with reality. It is not pretty, it does suck but it is what we have to work with, so make the most of it. Hiding does not help. Stop being an ostrich and lets get on with our lives and if you think reality sucks, do something to make it better for others as opposed to being consumed by your own petty self despair. If you can’t appreciate your circumstance go do some volunteer work for people that are worse off than you, nothing quiet like a good reality check. I really hope this makes you angry enough to make a change.

Lord have mercy on us all.

I am South African. Always have been always will be. I love my country. I love my wife and two children.

I also really enjoy solving problems. I currently work as a Software Architect exploring new solutions for business problems. Having been round the block a few times I enjoy showing new developers how best to solve problems, how to find answers and how to approach solution development.

In my spare time I enjoy riding my super bike, training in Systema and horsing around with my family.
